ESSENTIAL OILS are extracts from a natural source such as plants, leaves, tree and flowers. True essential oils are pure and undiluted. Most essential oils are obtained by steam destillation and extraction. It is said that essential oils can help create balance in one's physical , emotional and spiritual well being.

The best way to use an essential oil is to put a few drops in a diffuser (pictured here). The diffuser holds a small amount of water. Put a few drops of essential oil in the water. Then, light a candle below and the flame will heat the water enough to evaporate - or diffuse - it. The water droplets will take with them some of the essential oil that, in a very diluted form, will come in contact with your skin or be taken into your lungs (in that diluted form) when you take a breath. ESSENTIAL OIL IS NOT TO BE TAKEN INTERNALLY! Also, you should not put it directly on your skin unless it is very diluted with water.

The use of essential oils is not just a "New Age" phenomenon. These oils have been used for thousands of years and are doucumented in ancient Egyptian, Hebrew and Chinese texts. Essential oils such as Cedarwood were used in Egypt to help in the mummification process and also as one of the first cosmetics to rejuvenate the skin.

The Yellow Emperor's book of Internal Medicine (2,000 B.C.) prescribes the use of several esential oils. Even the Bible describes the power and effectiveness of essential oils. The Normans used botanical oils to curb infection and deter lice and fleas. A review of historical documents indicates that lavender was widely used in the thirteenth century during the crusades.

Current-Day Uses: Today essential oils are used in a variety of ways. Seminars on aromatherapy are commonly featured throughout North America, Europe and Japan. Books, news articles and original research by academic and medical institutions continue to report on the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy. Essential oils are used today to reduce discomfort and promote general wellness.

Popular uses of essential oils include: increasing respiration (Eucalyptus), eliminating headaches (Lavender applied to temple area), increasing attention and concentration (Peppermint and Rosemary), alleviating depression (Geranium), effective antiviral and antibacterial aids (Lavender and Tea Tree), relieving jet lag (just mix Rosemary, Ylang Ylang and Lemon in a carrier oil such as almond oil, grapeseed oil or even an unscented lotion or cream) and dandruff control (add Cedarwood and Rosemary to Jojoba oil).
